What’s On the Line:

Our Careers. Our Profession. Our Future.

We previously presented to you our comprehensive Opening Proposal, which identified your priorities for these negotiations. As of December, we have presented all of our proposals to management and have received some proposals and counterproposals from management, none of which have yet addressed your priorities.

On The Line provides you with a side-by-side comparison of where we currently stand in the process. Rather than point out our opinion of what management is seeking, we encourage you to read through each section and decide for yourself if management is addressing your priorities.  Industry-leading compensation is the one part we agree with management; however, we are not going to pay for our increased compensation at the cost of our quality of life.

If the past few years have taught us anything, it is to be prepared for the unexpected. We realized the value of many of the protections in our Contract during the pandemic, and we’ve all experienced the shortcomings of management to meaningfully address our concerns related to irregular operations, schedule flexibility, and the impact of “productivity” in the construction of our schedules.

Many of the improvements you have directed us to seek directly impact our quality of life in the workplace and on our time off. We have worked through an unprecedented pandemic together and operational challenges that affected our quality of life. United Airlines got back to profitability as a direct result of your professionalism as the frontline workers of this airline. Fighting for improvements by standing strong together will get us to the finish line.

  • Welcome to the first edition of ON THE LINE. Included in this publication is a status of proposals. This is a summary of our proposals set in contrast to the proposals made by management to this point. In addition to Negotiations News, each quarter we will provide a comprehensive update on our negotiations including the status of proposals. The review of the proposals is comprehensive. However, not all proposals are exhibited – only for the purpose of keeping this publication to a reasonable length.

How to Read the Status of Proposals

The left-hand column is a summary of our proposals. The right-hand column is a summary of management’s proposals. The notation of ‘BOOK’ indicates no change to the current contractual language, application and practice is being proposed.

We have attempted to summarize each parties’ position as concisely as possible - where both columns indicate the same – it indicates agreement on that provision. In future editions of ON THE LINE, you will be able to track changes to proposals as they will be indicated in red lettering.

Each Section of the Contract will ultimately achieve a “T.A.” or “tentative agreement” between the parties prior to a final agreement. Sections tentatively agreed (T.A.) upon are not final until a final agreement has been reached. A Tentative Agreement must be ratified by AFA Members in order to take effect.

Important: This is just a summary, and does not include a full review of our collective goals as contained in our opening proposal. You may find it helpful to review our opening proposal document for additional detail and important negotiations related educational material on our website along with the information in this edition of ON THE LINE.
